DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

Domestic violence occurs when a family member, partner or ex-partner attempts to physically or psychologically dominate or control another. Domestic violence often refers to violence between spouses, but can also include cohabitants and non-married intimate partners. Domestic violence occurs in all cultures; people of all races, ethnicities, religions, sexes and classes can be perpetrators, or victims, of domestic violence. It is perpetrated by both men and women.

Domestic violence has many forms, including physical violence, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, intimidation, economic abuse, verbal harassment or threats of violence. Violence can be criminal, and includes physical assault, sexual abuse, and stalking. Although emotional, psychological and financial abuse themselves are not criminal behaviors, they are forms of abuse and can lead to criminal violence.

Recent attention to domestic violence began in the women's movement in the 1970s, as concern about wives being beaten by their husbands gained attention. Estimates are that only about a third of cases of domestic violence are actually reported in the United States. In other places with less attention and less support, reported cases are even lower.

Domestic violence should not happen to anybody... Ever... Period. But it does - and when it does, there is help. The police are an immediate source of help; prosecutors, judges and private attorneys also offer safety, protection and assistance to victims of domestic violence. If in doubt, contact an attorney who handles domestic violence cases and let them explain your rights and the options you have. They can help you quickly and safely get out of an abusive situation. In an emergency, call the police first and contact an attorney second.

Our firm is dedicated to helping victims of domestic violence get their lives back. Whether it’s physical, verbal, or emotional abuse, we understand not only the solutions and painful effects of the abuse, but we understand the solutions as well.

We do everything we can to educate each victim and encourage the batterers to get the necessary help, but our main focus as a law firm is to take legal action that will alleviate or terminate the abusive situation.
